Escalante Petrified Forest State Park – May 2026
Escalante Petrified Forest State Park is located outside of the town of Escalante, Utah. It’s a small state park with a reservoir, visitor center and campground.
The highlight of the park is the trail that leads to the petrified wood. It’s a self-guided tour, so make sure to pick up a trail guide before you start! The start of the trail is a bit steep but it levels off at the top where the petrified wood, mainly full logs or rounds, is located.
The colors of the petrified wood are reminiscent of Arizona rainbow petrified wood. Collecting is not allowed in the state park!
The visitor center is small but worth stopping in to see some interesting rocks on display. Don’t forget to bring some quarters and a penny for the penny smashing machine!
